Hudson Valley, NY
After years of contemplation, this NYC interior designer decided to take the plunge and design a modern dream cottage nestled within the woods of this lakeside property in Hudson, New York. Finding this piece of property on the lake, our first idea was to start the design at the onset with a sleek and dramatic winding driveway. We used white pebble gravel with sharp edging to create a natural but dramatic entrance. Upon approaching the modern cottage, the owner would be faced with a two-story glass entry. The first floor includes guest suites and a two-car garage and ample storage for year-round activities. We created an all-glass modern staircase, to mimic the water views and also keep them unobstructed. This staircase pours into the second floor and the views continue in the open plan of the living, dining and kitchen spaces. The master suite has an expansive glass wall for a yearlong dramatic view of the lake and mountains. Wanting to use this second property year-round, we created a custom Rumford fireplace and marble surround as well as an outdoor deck for easy entertaining by the fire. For the surround we opted for a dramatic areobascato marble and the deck was constructed with cedar planks and horizontal stainless-steel wire cables.
Beyond the glass and screen porch there is an outdoor deck/lounge designed for entertaining, complete with a fire pit, freestanding grill and infrared heaters to provide warmth on chilly evenings. No modern cottage could be complete without a dock extending out over the lake for diving and swimming. The palette of exterior materials consists mostly of black cedar siding, metal standing seam roofing and exposed concrete which were carefully chosen to create a stark and dramatic effect against all the nature that surrounds the home.
Having worked with this interior designer on numerous projects for our clients, we were quickly able to finalize the process through initial concept sketches, plans and elevations, renderings and technical drawings until every detail was set. Exterior architectural details and interior architectural and interior architectural millworks were designed down to the last detail. Obstacles such as permits for the water dock and well location were aided by a local site engineer to help the process go smoothly with the town.
